Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the first thermal power project of THDC India Limited, the 1320 MW Khurja Super Thermal Power Project (STPP), in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. The project is a milestone in THDC's shift from hydropower to diversified power generation, enhancing India's power sector.
1. Overview of the Project and Expansion of Capacity
The initial unit of 660 MW has been commissioned, which boosts the total installed capacity of THDC from 1587 MW to 2247 MW2.
PM Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project in 2019, which demonstrates the dedication of THDC towards timely completion and engineering prowess.
The project will help improve the availability of electricity in Uttar Pradesh, which will facilitate industrial development and regional growth.
2. THDC's Shift to Thermal Energy on Strategic Grounds
THDC India Limited, which has a traditional experience of hydropower ventures, is venturing out into thermal and renewable energies.
The Khurja Super Thermal Power Plant is a joint plant between NTPC Limited and the Uttar Pradesh Government, promoting public-private partnership in power development.
3. Environmental and Technological Advancements
The project employs new-generation environmental technologies such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) to minimize emissions.
A Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system prevents any water discharge from the plant, ensuring sustainable operations.
4. Future Prospectus and Energy Security
The other 660 MW unit is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025-26, further augmenting power generation capacity.
The project caters to India's vision of becoming energy independent, enabling economic growth and industrial development.
