On June 23, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee on the occasion of Balidan Divas, marking the 71st anniversary of the leader’s martyrdom. Dr. Mukherjee, a towering figure in Indian politics and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, is remembered for his unwavering commitment to national unity and integrity.
 
1. PM Modi’s Tribute
  • In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: > “Tributes to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his martyrdom day. He displayed incomparable courage and manliness to keep the integrity of the country intact. His invaluable contribution to nation building will always be remembered with reverence.”
  • The Prime Minister emphasized Dr. Mukherjee’s legacy as a patriot who laid down his life for the cause of national integration, particularly in the context of Jammu and Kashmir.
2. Remembering a Nationalist Visionary
  • Born in 1901, Dr. Mukherjee was a scholar, educationist, and statesman.
  • He served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and later as India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply.
  • In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of the BJP.
  • He died in 1953 under detention in Kashmir, protesting the special status granted to the region under Article 370.
3. Nationwide Observances
Across India, especially in BJP-led states like Telangana, party workers and leaders observed Balidan Divas with floral tributes, remembrance events, and discussions on Dr. Mukherjee’s contributions to Indian unity.
