Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Brazil from July 5–8, 2025, to participate in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, marking a pivotal moment in India’s diplomatic outreach to the Global South. The summit, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, will focus on climate finance, AI governance, and counter-terrorism.
This year’s BRICS gathering is the first since the bloc’s expansion to 11 member nations, now including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Indonesia. Modi is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, reinforcing India–Brazil ties. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are reportedly skipping the summit, giving India a more prominent voice.
The visit is part of a broader five-nation tour, with stops in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Namibia, aimed at deepening India’s engagement with emerging economies and resource-rich partners.
