In a bid to empower the Northeast in a comprehensive manner, the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has announced a plan to create 50,000 employment opportunities in the maritime sector for Northeast youth in the coming decade. The Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal made the announcement in a press conference in Guwahati.
Key Highlights:

Guwahati Maritime Skill Development Centre and one new Centre of Excellence in Dibrugarh will be training centers, and the latter will be capitalized with Rs 200 crore.

They are to create 5,000 qualified experts annually, to work for the shipping, logistics, and inland water transport industries.

The project is in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030, which seeks to make India one of the top 10 shipbuilding countries by the decade's end.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Boost

The Centre has invested Rs 1,000 crore in inland waterways in the Northeast, and Rs 700 crore projects are to be completed by 2025.

Key developments include permanent cargo terminals at Pandu, Jogighopa, and Dhubri, and 85 community jetties to enhance regional trade and passenger traffic.

Four doubleduty weather stations cum tourist resorts will be constructed on the Brahmaputra at Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silghat, and Biswanath.
Global Interest and Tourist Drive:

Rhenus Logistics, a German logistics firm, has proven the viability of Northeast rivers for transportation and will ship 100 barges by 2027.

There is also a plan to construct a water metro complex in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur to promote ecotourism.
