India's domestic coal supply to utilities increased by 5.8% year-on-year in January 2025, reaching 76.41 million tonnes. This rise in local production has helped power plants boost their inventories, with coal stocks at utilities reaching 50.5 million tonnes by January 31, up from 38.59 million tonnes a year earlier. Despite the increase in domestic supply, India's coal imports remained flat at 201.30 million tonnes during the April-December period of the current fiscal year. The country's focus on enhancing domestic coal production is part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imports and ensure energy security.
