Praj Industries Ltd., the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to certify and accelerate the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in India. The collaboration aims to establish global best practices for SAF production, ensuring compliance with international aviation decarbonization standards.

SAF Certification & Adoption Framework:
  • The MoU focuses on developing a standardized certification process for SAF, ensuring quality, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
  • The initiative aligns with India’s Global Biofuels Alliance, targeting 2% SAF blending for international flights by 2028.
IATA’s Role in SAF Expansion:
  • IATA will provide technical guidance on life cycle assessment of feedstocks, ensuring efficient SAF production.
  • The association forecasts SAF production to reach 2 million tonnes (2.5 billion liters) in 2025, covering 0.7% of global aviation fuel needs.
ISMA’s Contribution to Feedstock Development:
  • ISMA will support sugarcane-based ethanol production, a key feedstock for SAF, reinforcing India’s leadership in biofuels.
  • The collaboration aims to scale up SAF production, reducing aviation’s carbon footprint.
Challenges & Policy Recommendations:
  • IATA warns that Europe’s SAF mandates have made SAF five times more expensive than conventional jet fuel, urging governments to create effective policies.
  • The MoU seeks to eliminate market disadvantages for renewable energy producers, ensuring cost-effective SAF adoption.
Future Outlook & Industry Impact:
  • The partnership positions India as a key player in SAF development, fostering global aviation sustainability.
  • The initiative is expected to drive investment in SAF infrastructure, ensuring long-term environmental benefits.
Praj Industries’ collaboration with IATA and ISMA marks a significant milestone in India’s aviation sustainability efforts, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonization and global SAF adoption.
