President Droupadi Murmu opened a two-day Literary Conference called "How Much Has Literature Changed?" at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi on 29 May 2025.
President Murmu, in her speech, reiterated her profound admiration for literature and authors, something she has held dear since student life and one which has strengthened with each passing day.
She spoke of India's vast linguistic and literary diversity, pointing out that with so many languages and traditions, there is yet a distinct spirit of "Indianness" that binds them together.
The President emphasized that timeless human values are the essence of eternal literature. As society and institutions change, the emotional nucleus of literature—affection, empathy, and inspiration—remains stable.
Murmu added that modern literature is not moralistic or didactic anymore. Rather, today's authors are regarded as co-travelers who share and experience feelings and evoke emotions in co-travelers like them.
The Ministry of Culture and Sahitya Akademi-organized conference features some of the country's prominent literary personalities in a series of interesting sessions.
The important points that will be dealt with are:
Feminist Literature of India: Breaking New Grounds
Change in Literature vs. Literature of Change
New Directions of Indian Literature in Global Perspective
A special session marking the 300th anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar will cap the event to honor her legacy that has stood the test of time.
Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other notable personalities attended the inaugural ceremony.
President Murmu hoped that the event would have fruitful discussions and new ideas, enriching India's rich literary sphere even more.
