India is in high spirits as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla heads to the International Space Station on the Axiom-4 mission. President Droupadi Murmu summed up the mood perfectly by saying the “whole nation is proud” of his achievement.

Here’s what’s making this moment so special:

President Murmu congratulated Shukla and called his journey a new milestone for India’s space program. She said it’s inspiring to see an Indian astronaut heading into space as part of a global team.

In her message, she highlighted the international spirit of the mission. With astronauts from the US, Poland, Hungary, and India working together, she said it’s a great example of the world coming together as one family.

The President wished the entire Axiom-4 team success and pointed out that this mission strengthens the partnership between NASA and ISRO, opening up new opportunities for science and exploration.

Shukla’s flight is historic—he’s the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station since Rakesh Sharma in 1984. That’s over forty years since an Indian has been part of a mission like this.
The Axiom-4 crew will spend about two weeks on the ISS, carrying out dozens of science experiments, some in collaboration with Indian researchers.

Prime Minister Modi and other leaders also sent their congratulations, saying the whole country is watching and cheering for Shukla.
People across India, especially in Shukla’s hometown, are celebrating this proud moment.
