On the eve of Republic Day 2026, the Union government announced gallantry and service medals for 982 personnel across police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services. The awards include 125 gallantry medals, 101 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has recognized the bravery and distinguished service of 982 personnel ahead of the 77th Republic Day celebrations. The honors span gallantry awards for those who displayed exceptional courage in conflict zones, as well as service medals for long-standing dedication in challenging conditions.
Among the gallantry recipients, 45 personnel were decorated for operations in Jammu and Kashmir, 35 for actions in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and five for service in the northeast. Four fire service rescuers also received gallantry medals. The Jammu and Kashmir Police secured the highest number of gallantry awards at 33, followed by Maharashtra Police with 31, Uttar Pradesh Police with 18, and Delhi Police with 14.
