India's go-to comfort food of dal-chawal is receiving a cardiologist's seal of approval as a heart-friendly force to be contended with. Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences and Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Jivitesh Satija, has prescribed a five-step desi diet that is simple, doable, and surprisingly effective.
The key points of Dr Satija's suggestions:
Replace white rice and processed grains like maida with whole wheat, jowar, bajra, brown rice, oats, and quinoa
Pair dal with rice or curd to create a complete protein profile, best for muscle strength and metabolism
Add anti-inflammatory spices like raw garlic, black pepper turmeric, curry leaves, and methi seeds to day foods
Include fermented foods like curd and buttermilk, and attempt to consume half a plate of vegetables and 1–2 fruits a day
Supplement with vitamin B12 (via dairy foods or supplements) and omega-3s from mustard oil, flaxseeds, and walnuts
Why it matters today:
Indians are getting heart disease 10–15 years ahead of Western populations
One in every four victims of heart attack in India is under 40
Higher sugar intake, processed foods, and low protein and fibre levels are driving the boom
Dr Satija's approach sidesteps hip superfoods and flavorless salads and goes directly to the core of traditional Indian foods which are tasty, inexpensive, and extremely healthy. His message is straightforward: real protection for the heart starts in the kitchen, not the chemist shop.
