Sawan Surge: Varanasi’s Divine Monday Draws a Sea of Devotion

The Hindu heartbeat of Varanasi pulsed with devotion on July 21 as thousands of pilgrims thronged to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to mark the second Monday of the holy month of Sawan. With Har Har Mahadev and Om Namah Shivaya chants, the temple witnessed a sea of Kanwariyas and pilgrims offering Gangajal and prayers to Lord Shiva.

Baba Kashi Vishwanath had the Gauri-Shankar Shringar, signifying the divine marriage of Shiva and Shakti.

The faithful began to assemble Sunday evening, standing in snaking lines along central city streets

Rudrabhishek and Mangala Aarti were performed early in the morning, and day-and-night darshan was performed throughout the day

Over 300 devotees witnessed the Mangala Aarti; flower petals were showered by temple CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra
