A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit 165 kilometers west of Indonesia's Gorontalo on Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The earthquake was at 12:51 GMT (20:51 local time) and had the epicenter in the Gulf of Tomini at a depth of 108.4 kilometers.
Initial reports show that the quake was felt by approximately 3.4 million people, the worst shaking being in Gorontalo where residents experienced light shaking. The USGS assigned a low probability of extreme casualties and economic damage with no significant damage or loss of life anticipated. The tsunami potential was also ranked very low as a result of the depth and magnitude of the earthquake.
Other coastal towns, including Palu and Luwuk, also experienced weak shaking, and no significant disruptions have been reported in the area. The authorities are keeping an eye on the situation, but no emergency response has been activated forthwith.
