If you’re wondering why schools are closed in parts of North India today, it’s because of the Kanwar Yatra and the first Sawan Somwar of the holy month. With thousands of devotees hitting the roads for the annual pilgrimage and big crowds at Shiva temples, local authorities in several districts have decided it’s safer to keep kids at home.
Where Are Schools Closed?
In Uttar Pradesh, districts like Varanasi, Budaun, Bareilly, and Rampur have declared holidays for all schools, especially those near main roads and temples. In Haryana’s Nuh district, schools are shut today, and even internet services are suspended to help manage the crowds and keep things peaceful. Uttarakhand’s Haridwar has closed all educational institutions, including Anganwadi centers, from July 14 to 23, since it’s a major hub for Kanwariyas. Over in Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain schools will be closed every Monday through Sawan, with the Mahakaleshwar temple drawing huge numbers of devotees.
Why the Holiday?
It’s all about safety and making sure students aren’t caught up in traffic jams or large gatherings. The Kanwar Yatra brings massive processions, and Sawan Somwar is a big day for Shiva worshippers, so roads are packed and security is tight.
If you’re a parent, it’s a good idea to double-check with your child’s school about the holiday and any special instructions. Stay safe and enjoy the festive spirit!
