Shyam Metalics Rolls Into Wagon Manufacturing: Kharagpur Set to Become New Rail Industry Hub

• Wagon Manufacturing Foray: SMEL is set to establish wagon manufacturing operations in Kharagpur, leveraging its advanced Ramsarup plant infrastructure. This move marks a significant diversification from its core steel and ferro alloys business, aligning with India’s growing demand for railway logistics and infrastructure.
• Industrial Growth and Job Creation: The operationalization of the Ramsarup plant is expected to generate around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in Kharagpur’s industrial belt, underscoring SMEL’s role in regional socio-economic development. The plant boasts a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) unit with a 150,000 TPA capacity and a 20 MW captive power plant, providing a robust base for new manufacturing lines.
• Rail Infrastructure Expansion: SMEL is simultaneously expanding rail infrastructure at its other plants, including the addition of a wagon tippler by 2028 to double rail handling capacity and enhance operational efficiency. The company’s integrated approach ensures efficient movement of raw materials and finished goods, crucial for large-scale wagon production.
• Strategic Vision: Vice Chairman and MD Brij Bhushan Agarwal emphasized that these initiatives are part of SMEL’s long-term strategy to drive operational excellence and support India’s infrastructure ambitions, further solidifying its leadership in the steel and allied industries.
