Silver Threads of Friendship: Modi’s Gift to Cyprus Woven with Indian Craft

As part of his historic visit to Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a cultural diplomacy gesture by presenting First Lady of Cyprus Philippa Karsera with a handmade silver clutch handbag from Andhra Pradesh. The beautiful accessory tracing its origins to India's craft was accompanied by a Kashmiri silk carpet, which was gifted to President Nikos Christodoulides.

Key Highlights:

The silver clutch purse was crafted using the ancient repoussé technique, with intricate floral patterns based on temple and royal designs.
A semiprecious gemstone at the center makes its appearance regal, and the curved design, ornamental handle, and embossed edges strike a balance between tradition and contemporary sophistication.
Originally intended for ritual use, today these bags are luxury collector items, symbolizing India's new design heritage.
The gift affirms India's commitment to "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"—one world, one family—through pride of the artisan and cultural exchange.
PM Modi's visit also included delegationlevel discussions, a business roundtable, and signing of a number of MoUs to enhance bilateral collaboration in fintech, renewable energy, and trade.
Interestingly, PM Modi was also conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest national honor of Cyprus, which he dedicated to Indian citizens.
