Cricket fans in Kathmandu have something new to cheer about this week. The First Indian Ambassador’s Cricket Tournament is underway at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, and it’s already drawing a lot of attention from both the local community and the diplomatic circle.
Here’s what’s happening:
-
The tournament kicked off with a simple but lively opening ceremony. Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava was joined by British Ambassador Rob Fenn and Bhrigu Dhungana from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Their presence set a friendly, welcoming tone for the matches ahead.
-
There are six teams in the mix: Indian Embassy, British Embassy, Federation of Nepali Journalists, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Corporate XI, and a team from the Indian diaspora. Each team brings its own energy and style to the field.
-
The format is T20, which means the games are quick and packed with action. The tournament will run for four days, so there’s plenty of cricket to enjoy.
-
In the first match, the Indian Embassy team chased down a target of 147 runs set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, winning with five overs to spare. It was a confident start.
-
The Corporate XI team also made a strong impression, beating the Federation of Nepali Journalists by 68 runs after putting up a big total.
Beyond the scores, the tournament is about bringing people together. Diplomats, journalists, professionals, and members of the Indian community in Nepal are all getting a chance to connect, not just on the field but off it as well.
The atmosphere at the ground is relaxed and upbeat. People are enjoying the matches, chatting in the stands, and celebrating good cricket, regardless of which team is winning.
It looks like this tournament could become a regular event, giving cricket fans and the diplomatic community something to look forward to each year.
