India's farmers planted more summer crops this year, taking the summer crop area to 37.54 lakh hectares in early March 2025-an increase of 6.54 lakh hectares over last year. Rice continues to be the major summer crop, and its sowing area increased by 2.8 lakh hectares to 27.13 lakh hectares, thanks to improved irrigation and government assistance. Pulses have witnessed spectacular growth, especially moong and urad, with rising demand and favorable prices.

This surge in sowing activity is augmented by the India Meteorological Department's forecast of an above-normal monsoon at 105% of long-period average, which can bring adequate rains between June and September. The strong monsoon outlook is boosting farmer confidence, with the hope of better yields, higher rural incomes, and an escalation to the agriculture-driven economy. With helpful government support and favorable weather, this crop season may be the notable agricultural upturn.
