The Southwest Monsoon swept across the whole country nine days early, which is only the tenth time since 1960 it has occurred in June. Delhi, however, lagged a bit, with the monsoon making its usual start date of June 27, two days later, even though the balance of the country had undergone early progression.

The southwest monsoon has advanced to the remaining parts of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and the entire Delhi region today. It thereby covered the entire country on June 29, rather than the normal date of July 8," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Key Highlights
Historic Early Coverage:
The monsoon engulfed the entire India by June 29, 2025, which had happened only ten times since 1960, and nine days ahead of the normal July 8 schedule.

Delhi's Delayed Arrival:
While the majority of India had seen the early rains, Delhi saw the onset of the monsoons two days late, which started on June 29 instead of the regular June 27. This is unusual, with the monsoon initially reaching Delhi before covering the rest of India.

Weather Warnings:
IMD announced a yellow alert for Delhi, predicting light to moderate rain for the next couple of days. Northwest India and the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Kerala will witness heavy rain.

Meteorological Factors:
The delay in Delhi resulted from an anticyclonic flow which stopped the monsoon's advance for a short while, but the system has broken now and allowed the rains to move forward.

Swiftest Coverage Since 2020:

This is the fastest monsoon coverage across the country since 2020, when it completed by June 26.

Earlier Developments Elsewhere:

The monsoon struck Kerala on 24th May, a week earlier than expected, and hit Mumbai on 26th May, almost two weeks early. Rainfall Forecasting: Central and Northwest India are expected to experience abundant rain activity in the coming days, according to officials at IMD.
