India has introduced e-passports embedded with RFID chips and biometric data, aiming to modernize travel documentation. Over 80 lakh e-passports have already been issued since May 2025, with all new and renewed passports adopting this format. The initiative promises enhanced security, faster verification, and reduced risks of forgery.
A leap in passport technology
Rolled out under the Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0, the e-passport integrates a contactless smart chip into the booklet’s back cover. This chip securely stores demographic and biometric details, including fingerprints and facial recognition data, ensuring printed information matches digital records. The system is Aadhaar- and DigiLocker-enabled, offering seven layers of security and international certification. Legacy passports will remain valid until expiry, but by 2035, all Indian passports are expected to be fully electronic. The upgrade is designed to streamline airport checks, reduce impersonation, and strengthen India’s global travel infrastructure.
