Tánaiste Simon Harris has emphasized that Ireland must continue to go out seeking new markets for its goods, even while the short-term relief of a 90-day US tariff suspension holds. Speaking to journalists after meetings with US officials in Washington DC, Harris characterized the EU-US trade relationship as "vital" but emphasized diversification to insulate Ireland's economy from repeated global trade tensions.
One particular Government Trade Forum, chaired by Harris, urged a six-week Action Plan on Market Diversification, prioritizing alternative export markets and fresh supply chains, especially for sectors like pharmaceuticals. While welcoming the suspension of tariffs, Harris warned of the continued risks and urged Irish business to take advantage of this moment to seek new opportunities globally.
Ireland's strategy is to tap into EU alliances, expand in emerging markets, and support innovation to ensure long-term economic security.
