Commuters of Mumbai Harbour and Trans-Harbour Line were badly affected Tuesday morning when a technical issue struck close to Nerul station. The technical snag, which was at 8:03 AM, halted services for nearly 45 minutes, leading to huge overcrowding at key stations and forcing several commuters to take other routes.
1. What happened?
The issue was due to a breakdown in the signal system at Nerul station, which affected train movement on the Harbour Line (CSMT-Panvel) and Trans-Harbour Line (Thane-Panvel).
Two trains were blocked, necessitating manual clamping of points prior to resumption of services.
A few of the trains were diverted via Vashi but delays persisted, which annoyed passengers.
2. Commuter Issues & Overcrowding
The disruption occurred during peak hours and involved office employees and daily commuters.
Masses of people lined up at terminals, and passengers attempted to board alternative transport.
The majority of passengers complained about frequent technical failures, requesting better railway facilities.
3. Railway Response and Restoration Activities
Central Railway officials confirmed that the issue was resolved by 8:50 AM, but residual delays continued.
Officials vowed that measures are being taken to avoid future upsets.
The incident follows recent overcrowding-related fatalities, prompting calls for automatic door-closing systems in Mumbai’s suburban trains.
