The End of Free Rides: JioStar Removes Content from YouTube

In a major development, JioStar, which is headed by Mukesh Ambani, is set to take its entertainment content off YouTube. The move is intended to stem subscriber migration from traditional TV to free online streaming. The move comes after JioStar recently introduced JioHotstar, a single streaming platform that integrates the content libraries of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. By putting content behind a paywall on JioHotstar, JioStar aims to expand its paid subscribers and defend the pay-TV segment. Content to be withdrawn from YouTube will take effect from May 1, though the final decision hasn't been finalized yet. The decision is consistent with larger industry moves to contain churn and enhance paid subscriptions within the broadcasting industry.
