In a landmark moment for urban mobility in Haryana, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, alongside Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, laid the foundation stone for Phase 1 of the Gurugram Metro project on September 5, 2025. The ceremony, held at Gurugram University auditorium, marked the beginning of a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at easing congestion, reducing pollution, and boosting connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Manohar Lal Khattar echoed the sentiment, recalling the legacy of India’s first metro launched by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002. Khattar also announced that the Union government will provide 10,000 buses at concessional rates across India, with 450 earmarked for Haryana and 100 specifically for Gurugram—complementing the metro’s impact with enhanced surface transport.

The civil construction contract for Phase 1 has been awarded to Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL) and Ranjit Buildcon Limited (RBL), with a Letter of Acceptance issued by the Gurugram Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC). The project is expected to be completed within 30 months, setting a target for operational readiness by early 2028.
