The Indian government has finally launched the APAAR ID Card, a special 12-digit student identification number for students right from pre-primary to higher education. This online document, being given by the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), keeps the academic details of the students in a central place. While Aadhaar is an overall identification, APAAR ID specifically deals with academic records. The student can register on the ABC site or through DigiLocker by furnishing personal and educational information. The card is downloadable from the ABC site upon registration. The advantages are increased mobility of the student, transfer of credits from one institution to another, and ease in record maintenance. Consent of parents is necessary for registration, and the card is associated with the Aadhaar number of the student for verification purposes.
