Indian athletes delivered a show-stopping performance at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, rewriting records and clinching gold with flair. On a historic Friday, Gulveer Singh stole the spotlight by completing a remarkable double, adding the men’s 5000m gold to his earlier 10,000m triumph. His blistering 13:24.77 run shattered the previous meet record, etching his name among the continent’s elite long-distance runners.
Teen sensation Pooja Singh soared to new heights in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.89m for gold and breaking her own U-20 national record. At just 18, she became only the second Indian woman ever to win a high jump medal at the Asian Championships, following in the footsteps of Bobby Aloysius after a 25-year gap.
The medal rush continued with Nandini Agasara’s dramatic heptathlon victory, making her only the third Indian woman to clinch gold in the event. Meanwhile, Parul Chaudhary set a new national record in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking 9:12.46 for silver.
Earlier in the meet, Avinash Sable ended a 36-year wait for India with gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, while Jyothi Yarraji dazzled with a championship record in the women’s 100m hurdles. The women’s 4x400m relay team also ended a 12-year drought, powering to gold and cementing India’s rise in Asian athletics.
With 18 medals (8 gold, 7 silver, 3 bronze), India stands second on the medal tally, trailing only China, and signaling a new era of dominance on the continental stage.
