Uttar Pradesh government is set to train farmers in operating and maintaining modern irrigation equipment such as pipes, sensors, filters, and pumps to boost self-reliance, reduce system breakdowns, and improve farm productivity under a ‘one cluster, one crop’ model.

Key Highlights Of The Training Initiative

* Farmers will receive practical, hands-on training in the use of modern irrigation equipment including pipes, sensors, pumps, and filters
* The initiative aims to reduce system breakdowns by enabling farmers to manage and maintain tools independently
* The ‘one cluster, one crop’ model will link training with market-oriented agriculture to ensure focused capacity building

Scheme Framework And Technological Integration

* Training is part of the Modernisation of Command Area Development (MCAD) programme launched by the UP government under PMKSY with central sanction of ₹1,600 crore
* Pilot implementation is underway in select clusters with technical oversight from IIT Kanpur
* Training will be supported by advanced tech infrastructure such as pressurized pipe irrigation networks and smart monitoring systems

Expected Benefits For Water Management And Farmers

* The modern tools and practices can achieve up to 90 percent water-use efficiency, reduce energy costs, and boost crop yields
* Equipment training and a market-linked cropping model will help farmers gain more control and improve incomes

Implementation Timeline And Oversight

* The MCAD programme is being implemented in phases: phase one by March 2026, followed by phase two through 2031
* Robust governance structure in place with real-time monitoring at national, state, and district levels

Context: Wider Irrigation Reforms In UP

* UP has already significantly expanded drip and sprinkler irrigation from 3.35 lakh to 6.02 lakh hectares between 2020–25 under the Atal Bhujal and other schemes
* The state aims to reach over 25 percent of farmers in groundwater-stressed areas and offers up to 90 percent subsidy on equipment

About Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Programme
The programme is part of a concerted effort by the UP government under CM Yogi Adityanath to modernize irrigation infrastructure, conserve water, enhance resilience, and empower farmers through modern technology and equipment.
