The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has been suspended for 24 hours following a warning of heavy rain and a cloudburst just near Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road. It's a precautionary step to save thousands of pilgrims from the rising threat of landslides, flash floods, and road blockage.
Key Highlights:
Suspension of Yatra: Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey suspended the yatra and asked the police and administration to stop pilgrims at major points like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag, and Vikasnagar. Pilgrims already on the move are being stopped at safe places to prevent accidents.
Cloudburst and Missing Workers: A cloudburst has resulted in extensive damage to a half-built hotel complex site at Silai Band, and nine workers went missing. NDRF, SDRF, police, and local officials are conducting rescue operations as weather and terrain are unfavorable.
Road Blocks: Heavy rains have resulted in landslips blocking the major roads such as Yamunotri road and Badrinath National Highway at Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Restoration is in progress, but traffic movement is still not allowed. Over 40,000 individuals in the Kumaon area are cut off by road blockages.
Weather Alert: India Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert for heavy to very heavy rain in Uttarakhand over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of flash floods and landslides. The disaster management officials are closely monitoring the situation.
Government Advice: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami asked the public to stay indoors and not move unnecessarily. Rescuers are providing proper food, shelter, and medical care to stranded pilgrims. This suspension emphasizes the dangers of the monsoon season within the Himalayas and the need to keep pilgrims safe on one of India's most sacred religious pilgrimages.
