Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the country’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, has successfully concluded a long-term wage settlement with its recognised employee union, the United Union of Hyundai Employees (UUHE). The agreement, reached after multiple rounds of negotiation, marks a significant milestone in HMIL’s industrial relations strategy and reinforces its commitment to employee welfare and operational continuity.

The settlement comes at a time when the automotive sector is navigating supply chain challenges, rising input costs, and evolving labour dynamics. Hyundai’s proactive approach to structured wage negotiations is expected to set a benchmark for collaborative labour practices in India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Key Highlights From The Wage Agreement

- HMIL signs long-term wage settlement with UUHE, the recognised majority union
- Over 2,000 technicians affiliated with UUHE to benefit from revised compensation
- Agreement follows industry-standard negotiation protocols and Tamil Nadu labour guidelines
- Previous three-year settlement expired on March 31, 2024
- New wage structure expected to be implemented with retrospective effect from April 1, 2024
- Hyundai reiterates its position as a best-in-class employer in terms of wages and benefits

Terms Of The Settlement And Employee Impact

While the exact financial terms of the new agreement are yet to be disclosed, sources indicate that the revised package will include a phased salary increase, similar to the previous settlement signed in June 2022. That agreement granted a monthly hike of Rs 28,200, distributed in a 55 percent, 25 percent, and 20 percent ratio over three years.

The new settlement is expected to follow a comparable structure, with additional provisions for:

- Performance-linked incentives
- Skill development allowances
- Enhanced medical and insurance coverage
- Improved shift allowances and transport benefits

The agreement will directly impact over 2,000 technicians at Hyundai’s Chennai plant, ensuring financial stability and reinforcing morale across the workforce.

Union Dynamics And Legal Context

The wage settlement was signed exclusively with UUHE, which continues to be the officially recognised union at HMIL as per the Labour Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. This recognition grants UUHE the sole authority to negotiate wage terms on behalf of the workforce.

However, the process has not been without contention. The Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU), backed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has challenged UUHE’s status, claiming majority support among unionised workers. HMIEU has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a secret ballot to determine the true majority union.

Hyundai has responded by filing a complaint alleging forged signatures in HMIEU’s voter list. The matter remains sub judice, and the company has declined to comment further on the legal proceedings.

Operational Continuity And Strategic Outlook

Despite the union dispute, Hyundai’s Chennai plant operations have remained unaffected. The company has maintained production schedules and ensured uninterrupted supply to domestic and export markets.

The wage settlement is expected to:

- Strengthen employee relations and reduce the risk of industrial action
- Support productivity and quality benchmarks across manufacturing lines
- Enhance Hyundai’s reputation as a responsible employer in India’s auto sector
- Provide a stable foundation for future investments and capacity expansion

Sources close to the company suggest that Hyundai is exploring further automation and digital integration at its facilities, which will require upskilling and retraining of its workforce—areas likely to be addressed in future labour negotiations.
