With tariff hikes effective July 3 (Jio & Airtel) and July 4 (Vi), India’s top telcos have revamped their annual prepaid plans, sparking debate over whether long-term recharges still offer real value.
Key Highlights:
Price Surge:
Jio’s ₹3,599 plan now offers 2.5GB/day for 365 days (up from ₹2,999).
Airtel’s ₹3,599 plan gives 2GB/day, while its ₹1,999 plan offers just 24GB for the year.
Vi’s ₹3,499 plan includes 1.5GB/day, unlimited night data, and weekend rollover.
Shorter Validity Hidden in Plain Sight:
Jio’s ₹1,899 plan (24GB data) is valid for 336 days, not a full year—making it pricier per day than Airtel or Vi’s ₹1,999 plans.
OTT & Extras:
Jio bundles JioTV, Cinema, Cloud;
Airtel offers Wynk, Apollo 24/7, HelloTunes;
Vi throws in night data, backup data, and OTT perks on higher-tier plans.
Value vs Convenience:
While yearly plans offer recharge-free peace of mind, many users now find monthly or quarterly plans more flexible and cost-effective, especially with rising prices and shifting data needs.
Industry Insight:
Analysts suggest telcos are nudging users toward shorter validity plans to boost ARPU (Average Revenue Per User), making yearly plans less attractive by design.
Bottom line: Yearly plans still exist—but they’re no longer the no-brainer they once were.
