Yellow Alert, Red Hot Days: Tamil Nadu’s Second Summer Begins

Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for an unexpected rise in temperature in the next few days. The alert was issued because of the intensification of the westerly winds and sustained dry conditions over the region.
 
Major Weather Trends:
  • The maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 2 to 4°C on July 8 and 9, and the temperature is expected to be maximum on July 9.
  • The maximum temperature was observed at Madurai Airport at 39°C, and the minimum at Karur Paramathi.
  • Chennai also will cross the 38°C mark, with high humidity adding to the discomfort.
  • Dry weather will dominate most districts, but marginal to moderate rain will be seen in scattered hill and forest blocks until July 13.
Precautionary Measures Suggested:
  • Water in abundance and avoid too much sun exposure, especially in the middle of the day.
  • Wear light, lightcolored clothing and protective gear like hats and sunglasses.
  • Be cautious for sudden bouts of rains, particularly in The Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, which had as much as 6 cm of rains.
Health and Safety Outlook:
  • The RMC has also told individuals to remain indoors during the daytime and watch out for official announcements for shifting meteorological conditions.
  • The vulnerable groups, including children and the aged, are also urged to exercise caution to avoid heat illnesses.
