NGT Grants Interim Stay on TNPCB's Order Against Chennai Petroleum

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted an interim stay on the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board's (TNPCB) order demanding Rs 73.68 crore from Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) for damages related to an oil spill in Ennore. The NGT directed CPCL to deposit Rs 19 crore as a bank guarantee, representing 50% of the environmental damage cost. This decision provides temporary relief to CPCL, which had challenged the TNPCB's compensation order citing inaccuracies in the quantification of the spill. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing, allowing CPCL to contest the compensation amount based on its objections to the IIT-Madras report.
