NHAI Rolls Out India’s First GPS-Based Stop-Free Tolling On NH-48 Gujarat

On May 2, 2026, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) rolled out the country’s first barrier-less toll collection system on NH-48 in Gujarat. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari flagged off the initiative, calling it a paradigm shift in India’s highway infrastructure.

How The System Works

The MLFF system eliminates physical toll booths. Vehicles are identified through ANPR cameras and linked FASTag accounts, enabling automatic deduction of toll charges. In cases of insufficient FASTag balance, users receive an Electronic Notice (E-Notice) and must pay within 72 hours, failing which penalties apply.

The stop-free tolling system is expected to:

Reduce congestion and waiting times at toll plazas

Cut travel time by up to 30 minutes on busy stretches

Lower fuel consumption and emissions by eliminating idling

Improve transparency with automated toll collection

Future Expansion

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways confirmed that if successful, the MLFF model will be expanded to other national highways, aligning with India’s vision of digital infrastructure and smart mobility.
