Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaches Gothenburg today for his first visit to Sweden since 2018, the third leg of a five nation tour focused on trade and technology. Over two days, he and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will push cooperation on green transition, AI, startups, defence, space and resilient supply chains.
Modi’s May 17 to 18 stop in Sweden comes after visits to the UAE and the Netherlands, underlining how Europe figures in India’s wider push on technology partnerships and economic security. Officials say Gothenburg will serve as a platform to deepen the India Sweden Joint Innovation Partnership while also engaging with European industry leaders. The visit also revisits a Nordic track first opened during Modi’s 2018 Stockholm trip.
Why Sweden Is Back On The Route
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi will be in Gothenburg on May 17 and 18 at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, in what is his first Sweden visit since the India Nordic Summit of 2018.
Officials say the stop allows New Delhi to review ties with the European Union through Sweden and build on the India Sweden Joint Action Plan and Joint Innovation Partnership agreed during the earlier visit.
What Is On The Bilateral Agenda
The foreign ministry has outlined a broad agenda for Modi’s talks with Kristersson, covering green transition, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate action and people to people ties.
Moneycontrol reports that discussions are expected to focus on expanding trade and investment, including reviewing bilateral trade estimated at 7.75 billion dollars in 2025 and Swedish foreign direct investment of about 2.825 billion dollars into India between 2000 and 2025.
Engaging European Industry
Modi and Kristersson are also expected to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry in Gothenburg, a key pan European business forum that will also see participation from European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
Alongside formal talks, Modi will interact with Swedish and European chief executives to pitch India as a destination for innovation led manufacturing and digital partnerships, consistent with the government’s messaging through the wider five nation tour.
Link Back To 2018
Modi’s last Sweden visit in 2018, under then prime minister Stefan Lofven, produced an innovation partnership and joint action plan and saw India and Sweden co host the first India Nordic Summit with Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
This week’s Gothenburg leg is expected to deepen that framework, even as Modi’s broader itinerary takes him onward to Norway and Italy to continue conversations on trade, energy security and emerging technologies with other European partners.
