Odisha Unveils ₹9,200 Crore Healthcare Overhaul, 4,000 New Hospital Beds to Boost Medical Access

In a landmark move to strengthen public health infrastructure, the Odisha government has announced a massive ₹9,200 crore investment to redevelop four of the state’s major medical institutions. The ambitious plan, finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, is set to add nearly 4,000 new hospital beds and modernize medical facilities across key regions.

 

The Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla will see its bed capacity soar from 1,485 to 2,861 with an investment of ₹1,594 crore. MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur will expand from 1,583 to 2,033 beds at a cost of ₹1,014.13 crore. Rourkela Government Hospital’s redevelopment, budgeted at ₹627.16 crore, will increase beds from 437 to 763. The largest allocation, ₹5,958 crore, is earmarked for Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, boosting its bed strength from 750 to 2,582.

 

This healthcare push also includes ongoing upgrades at Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Acharya Harihar Cancer Institute, aiming for completion by 2026. With these projects, Odisha targets a 30% rise in hospital bed capacity and improved access to advanced medical care for its rapidly growing population.
