Operation Devotion: Kolkata’s Santosh Mitra Square to Salute Armed Forces with ‘Op Sindoor’ Puja Theme

This Durga Puja in Kolkata this year will be a blend of patriotism and tradition since the iconic Santosh Mitra Square committee is going to reveal a new theme in bold—Operation Sindoor. Drawing inspiration from India's recent cross-border military strike on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, the pandal will be transformed into a grand tribute to the nation's armed forces.

Theme Spotlight

The pandal will be a simulation of a war zone, with full-sized replicas of BrahMos missiles, S-400 air defense systems, and artillery scenarios.

Organizers assure a largely live-action experience, with live-action simulations of Indian military precision and valor.

The theme is intended to evoke national pride and commemorate Indian soldiers' sacrifice.

Organizational Highlights

The puja is performed by BJP leader Sajal Ghosh, councillor of Ward 50, who emphasized the need to follow public sentiment and the times.

The committee has once again declined the West Bengal government's annual puja grant, this time as a token against the misuse of public money.

Security & Civic Oversight

The Kolkata Police have passed on a detailed advisory to the organizers, in the guise of crowd control of last year's stampede-like crowd.

Restrictions on activities: no Ferris wheel, light-and-sound displays, or hawkers near the exit gate.

The committee must accommodate 60 CCTV cameras, stage more than 250 volunteers during peak seasons, and have VIP entry and exit points distinct from one another.

Cultural Context

Santosh Mitra Square has a legacy of high-concept themes, and last year's replication of the Ram Mandir is a prime example.

By conducting Operation Sindoor, the committee continues its policy of merging cultural festivities with socio-political satire.
