Paris Chess Spectacle: Gukesh Headlines, Niemann Withdrawal Sparks Intrigue

Paris will host the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour that begins on April 7, featuring an all-star cast of 12 top players, including four Indian Grandmasters D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, and Vidit Gujrathi. Gukesh, India's current world champion, will be the team captain following a disappointing performance in the first event in the series in Weissenhaus, Germany.

 

Vidit Gujrathi enters the tournament having recently been married, and Arjun Erigaisi qualified having won three straight Freestyle Fridays. The tournament is sure to be filled with exciting games as players adapt to Freestyle Chess (Chess 960) where random starting positions preclude standard opening preparation.

 

The event will begin with two days of round-robin play at the historic Parisian Bois de Vincennes. Eight players will then advance to the knockout phase, ultimately ending in a thrilling finale on April 14. The champion will be awarded a prize of $200,000 from a total prize pool of $750,000.

 

In a shocking twist, American Grandmaster Hans Niemann pulled out of the tournament only 48 hours before it was to start on personal reasons. Niemann's pullout has ended hopes of a much-awaited clash with Magnus Carlsen, reminding individuals of their controversial match at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov has been appointed as his replacement.

 

Even in the absence of Niemann and last year's withdrawal of Alireza Firouzja, the event features a dream lineup in Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Vincent Keymer. Eight of the world's top nine are present, and fans of chess will have the chance to experience tiebreak drama and brilliance in this unusual format. The Paris edition is the second stop on this year's Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour and will bring chess to new heights with its energetic vibe and global participation.
