Pedal to the Metal: India's Automakers Face Off Against Stricter Emissions Rules

India's demand for tighter fuel efficiency regulations has pitted automakers against environment champions. The Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) rules provide for reducing pollution by 30% over a period of three years and prove to be big hurdles for auto manufacturers. Fines amounting to a maximum of ₹50,000 can be levied on car makers for violating regulations. Those calling for tougher emissions rules cite such regulations as instrumental in the pursuit of green motoring. Yet car manufacturers fear the economic consequence and the achievability of achieving these high standards, with an emphasis needed for a middle way approach in terms of considering environmental objectives along with industrial viability.
