Pooja Singh, 19, cleared 1.93m in the women’s high jump, breaking Sahana Kumari’s 14-year-old national record of 1.92m set in 2012. This achievement not only earned her gold but also qualified her for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Pooja’s journey from training in village fields in Haryana to becoming India’s top high jumper highlights her resilience and determination. 

India’s Medal Haul

India’s contingent of 48 athletes has already made a mark at the championships. Alongside Pooja’s gold, Nitin Gupta won gold in the men’s 5000m race walk, Amanat Kamboj clinched gold in women’s discus throw, and Rahul Jakhar secured gold in the men’s decathlon with 7,185 points. Other medalists include Sadhana Devi (silver in triple jump), Upkar (silver in decathlon), and Neeru Pathak (bronze in 400m). 

Significance Of The Achievement

Pooja’s record-breaking jump is India’s first-ever women’s high jump gold at the Asian U20 Championships. It also strengthens India’s growing reputation in athletics, with young talents consistently breaking records and qualifying for global events. Her performance is among the best in Asia’s U20 history and places her in contention for the World U20 Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, in August 2026.
