Education Ministry Discusses Multilingualism

The Ministry of Education held a high-level meeting to discuss multilingualism in schools, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP). The focus was on strengthening mother-tongue instruction, ensuring students grasp concepts clearly, while also encouraging foreign language learning for those engaged in international trade and commerce.

Mother Tongue As Foundation

Pradhan reiterated that primary education should be imparted in the mother tongue up to Class 5, with students later introduced to three languages, including at least two Indian languages. He cited global examples, such as the Netherlands, to underline the effectiveness of native-language education. 

Foreign Languages For Global Trade

While defending Indian languages, Pradhan clarified that foreign languages remain important for students who will represent India in global markets. He encouraged learning multiple foreign languages but cautioned against burdening children with them at the cost of conceptual clarity. 

Technology And Innovation

The Education Ministry also highlighted the integration of Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Indian languages, ensuring modern knowledge systems are accessible to all. This aligns with NEP’s vision of democratizing education and fostering innovation.
