Rising from Unrest: Northeast's Path to Inclusive Growth and Harmony

As the Modi government celebrates a decade of its "Ashtalakshmi" agenda for the Northeast, there are competing narratives. The Centre refers to development successes and effective settlement of long-pending problems in the region in the last 10 years. Higher spending on infrastructure and the BJP's increasing electoral foothold are held up as evidence of progress. The Opposition provides a counter-narrative with the Manipur unrest that broke out in May 2023. The vast spread unrest has taken many lives and displaced thousands of people. Critics argue the Manipur crisis punctures the government's claim of regional stability and development. A six-judge delegation of Supreme Court judges will tour Manipur relief camps on March 22, underlining the ongoing humanitarian issues in the state.
