Sanctity Meets Sustainability: Amarnath Yatra Sets New Standard for Eco-Conscious Pilgrimage

The biannual Amarnath Yatra, a holy pilgrimage to the Himalayan cave shrine in South Kashmir, is going green. The Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 has seen authorities adopt stringent waste management and sanitation initiatives. The pilgrimage must continue to be spiritually enriching and eco-friendly.

Highlights of the 2024 Yatra:

There were over 7,000 sanitation workers sent to deal with 114.57 tons of garbage, 43.30 tons of which was plastic and 27.43 tons inert garbage.

145 twin bins were strategically positioned on the road to improve segregation of dry waste and wet waste

10 twin-compartment trucks offered 100 percent coverage for the daily collection, while 14 de-sludging trucks handled 2,596 kiloliters of septage

780 toilets, 127 toilet seats, 119 urinals, and 40 bath units were installed and maintained for sanitary use

Selfie points and awareness drives prompt proper waste disposal and social media campaigning

TULIP programme Swachhagrahis organized sanitation and discouraged the application of single-use plastics

Infrastructure and long-term impact:

Nine solid waste management facilities were inaugurated in May 2023 in ten urban local bodies such as Sumbal, Qazigund, and Ganderbal

These facilities process 40 tons of wastage per day, with wet and dry wastage compost pits and material recovery facilities.

The zero-landfill policy seeks to avoid environmental degradation and maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage route intact
