SBI Plants Seeds for Sustainable Success: Growth Model Goes Green

State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest lender, is positioning itself for a future of sustainable growth and profitability. Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara has drawn up a holistic plan to create a scalable model that provides steady returns alongside promoting India's growing financial ecosystem.

Key to SBI’s approach is a robust branch expansion plan. The bank aims to open 400 new branches across the country in the current financial year, targeting emerging locations and underserved areas. This move reinforces SBI’s commitment to financial inclusion, even as digital transactions now account for nearly 89% of its business. Khara emphasized that physical branches remain vital for advisory and wealth services, especially in new and rural markets.

SBI’s roadmap also focuses on leveraging low-cost current and savings accounts (CASA) and boosting fee-based income streams. The bank is scaling up subsidiaries like SBI General Insurance and SBI Payment Services, with plans to further grow these units before considering public listings. This disciplined expansion, coupled with cost management and digital innovation, is designed to ensure sustainable returns for stakeholders.

With a network already exceeding 22,500 branches and a dominant share in deposits and advances, SBI is poised to strengthen its leadership. The bank’s digital infrastructure is also robust, capable of handling up to 20 crore UPI transactions daily, reflecting its adaptability in a rapidly changing financial landscape.
