Sheriff Exposes Scam Tactics: Fake Cop Calls on the Rise

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has issued a warning about scammers impersonating deputies and sergeants in phone calls to extract money from residents. These fraudsters use real names of MCSO employees and falsify caller IDs to appear legitimate. They claim the victim has a warrant or missed jury duty, demanding fines paid via gift cards, cash apps, or cryptocurrency to avoid arrest. MCSO emphasizes that they never request payments over the phone and advises residents to hang up immediately and report such incidents.
