SML Isuzu Ltd to Rebrand as SML Mahindra Limited Following Ministry Approval

In line with Mahindra & Mahindra’s growing presence in India’s commercial vehicle market, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has granted approval for SML Isuzu Limited to change its name to SML Mahindra Limited. This change follows Mahindra’s acquisition of nearly 59% ownership and echoes the company’s intent to integrate SML Isuzu more closely with the Mahindra brand.

The name change was approved post Mahindra & Mahindra’s acquisition of 58.96% stake in SML Isuzu from Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors Ltd for ₹555 crore.

The decision aims to align corporate identity with Mahindra’s brand while capitalizing on synergies in the >3.5-tonne commercial vehicle segment.

The company’s board has been reconstituted with Vinod Sahay appointed Executive Chairman and Dr. Venkat Srinivas as Executive Director & CEO, effective August 2025.

The acquisition and consequent rebranding are expected to strengthen Mahindra’s market share, currently modest at around 3% in the intermediate and heavy commercial vehicle segment.

This marks a strategic push for Mahindra to double its market share to 6% by FY31 and target over 20% by FY36, focusing on growth and innovation.

Shareholders will vote on the name change at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, followed by updates to corporate documents and regulatory filings.

SML Isuzu, founded in 1983, is a respected player in the trucks and buses industry with a strong presence across India.

The rebranding signals expanded product portfolio integration and enhanced customer value propositions aligned with Mahindra’s growth plans.
