Sri Lankan Navy Fires on Indian Fishermen, India Lodges Strong Protest

India summoned Sri Lanka's acting high commissioner to lodge a strong protest after the Sri Lankan Navy fired on Indian fishermen near Delft Island. The incident, which occurred on January 28, 2025, left five Indian fishermen injured, two of whom have grievous injuries. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the use of force is unacceptable and asked Sri Lanka to honor all previous agreements on issues related to fishermen. India demanded humane treatment of fishermen, taking into account their livelihood concerns. The Indian High Commission in Colombo also took up the issue with Sri Lanka's foreign ministry.
