Supreme Court Scrutinizes Bhopal Gas Tragedy Waste Disposal, Raising Environmental Concerns

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre, Madhya Pradesh government, and state pollution control board regarding the disposal of hazardous waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. The court is examining a plea challenging the disposal of 377 tonnes of toxic waste at Pithampur, near Indore. Concerns have been raised about potential health risks to nearby residents and contamination of water sources. The waste, originally from the Union Carbide factory, was recently shifted to Pithampur following a High Court order. This development comes 40 years after the tragedy, which claimed 5,479 lives and affected thousands more, highlighting ongoing environmental and health concerns stemming from one of the world's worst industrial disasters.
