Sweat, Sultry, and Smog: India's Cities Face a Winter Like No Other

As recorded by the Indian Meteorological India is witnessing an unusually warm winter, as temperatures in major cities rise steadily. January 2025 was registered as the warmest month in 120,000 years, with India's national mean temperature at a high of 19.02°C, just 0.1°C above the baseline of 1991-2020. In January 2025, the average temperature recorded in Delhi was 13.62°C, an anomaly of 0.35°C. Moreover, February 2025 turned out to be the hottest in 125 years.  The India Meteorological Department forecasts that March 2025 would be one of the warmest months of this year, with severe heatwave days likely across most parts of the country. Climate experts warn that 2025 could be even hotter than 2024 and, as always, vulnerable populations will bear the brunt of that impact, along with agriculture and infrastructure.
