Sweet Deals Ahead: UK-India Trade Pact Slashes Prices on Chocolates, Scotch & More

In a significant boost to two-way trade, the United Kingdom and India have agreed to a historic Free Trade Agreement that will make many British imports more accessible and affordable for Indian consumers. From favorite chocolates and high-quality salmon to the world-renowned Scotch whisky, the agreement will substantially reduce tariffs, paving the way for greater choice and lower prices. Key Highlights

A historic UK-India Free Trade Agreement will cut tariffs on a broad swath of British goods, making salmon, Scotch whisky, biscuits, chocolates, and others cheaper for Indian consumers.

Whisky and gin tariffs will be reduced from 150% to 75% immediately and eventually to 40% over a period of ten years, improving access to renowned British spirits. 

British commodities to have tariffs reduced are cosmetics, medical appliances, aircraft components, lamb, salmon, soft drinks, and electrical equipment.

The agreement accounts for 90% of tariff lines, with 85% being entirely tariff-free by a decade from now, and is set to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion ($34 billion) by 2040.

UK consumers will enjoy reduced prices and greater choice on imported Indian garments, shoes, and food items as the UK also liberalizes its own tariffs.

Both governments celebrate the pact as a "historic milestone" that will drive trade, generate jobs, and enhance economic relationships between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies.
