Swipe, Scan, Ride: Kochi Metro Goes Cashless with UPI Ticket Machines

In a major leap toward digital mobility, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has rolled out Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-enabled ticket vending machines across all metro stations along the Aluva–Thripunithura corridor. The initiative, launched on August 4, 2025, is part of KMRL’s broader push to modernize urban transit and reduce reliance on cash-based transactions.

Launch Event and Strategic Vision  

The new system was inaugurated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium metro station by Transport Commissioner Nagaraju C. The event marked a milestone in KMRL’s ongoing efforts to streamline ticketing and enhance commuter convenience.

How the UPI Ticketing System Works  

The newly installed machines allow passengers to purchase tickets instantly using any UPI-enabled mobile application. The process is simple and efficient:

- Commuters scan a QR code displayed on the vending machine  
- Payment is made via apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, or others  
- A digital ticket is generated, eliminating the need for physical cash or cards  

This system is especially beneficial during peak hours, helping to decongest ticket counters and reduce waiting times.

Digital Integration and ONDC Platform  

KMRL’s digital ticketing services are now available on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), expanding access through multiple platforms:

- Popular apps such as redBus, Tummoc, Yatri, EaseMyTrip, Rapido, Telegram (My Metro Kochi), and Kerala Savaari support ticket purchases  
- QR code scanning efficiency has been improved at Automated Fare Collection (AFC) gates, boosting adoption rates  
- The Kochi1 mobile app continues to serve as a central hub for digital ticketing and travel planning  

Environmental and Operational Benefits  

The shift to UPI-based vending machines offers several advantages beyond convenience:

- Reduces paper usage and supports eco-friendly commuting  
- Minimizes human error and fraud associated with manual transactions  
- Enhances data collection for operational planning and passenger flow analysis  

KMRL officials noted that the digital transition aligns with national goals for smart urban infrastructure and financial inclusion.

Future Expansion and Kakkanad Extension  

While celebrating the success of the UPI rollout, KMRL also addressed progress on the Kakkanad metro extension:

- The first five stations on the new stretch are expected to be operational by June 30, 2026  
- The remaining five stations are scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026  
- Utility shifting and land acquisition challenges have caused delays, but work is now on track
