Tata Steel Bets On HIsarna Technology To Cut Costs And Carbon Emissions

Traditional steelmaking through blast furnaces is capital-heavy and carbon-intensive. Tata Steel’s adoption of HIsarna technology marks a strategic shift toward cost efficiency and sustainability, aligning with India’s climate goals and the global push for greener industrial practices.  

What Is HIsarna Technology  

HIsarna is a next-generation smelting reduction process developed under Europe’s ULCOS (Ultra-Low CO₂ Steelmaking) program and refined by Tata Steel. Unlike conventional methods, it eliminates several intermediate steps, directly converting iron ore and coal into liquid iron, thereby reducing energy use and emissions.  

Cost Advantage  

A typical steel plant with one million tonnes capacity costs about ₹9,000 crore. Tata Steel’s HIsarna-based plant in Jamshedpur is projected at ₹4,000 crore, nearly half the usual capex. This cost efficiency could transform the economics of steelmaking in India.  

Carbon Reduction Potential  

HIsarna technology can cut carbon emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional blast furnaces. This aligns with Tata Steel’s long-term sustainability roadmap and India’s commitments to reduce industrial carbon footprints.
